When I first found out that I was expecting I knew that I wanted to cloth diaper. I was only a few weeks along at that point and thought that I would have plenty of time until the baby came to sew my own cloth diapers and build up a cloth diaper stash …or so I thought.
It wasn’t too long afterward that I started getting sick and knew that me sitting at the sewing machine for hours to sew the 20-30 something diapers that I needed was no longer an option. With the unexpected upfront costs of purchasing cloth diapers, I began to try to figure out different ways to cover the upfront cloth diaper expenses without having to dip into our savings account.
One of the first things that towards getting free cloth diapers was I did was take a quick inventory of items from around my home that I no longer used or needed that I knew I could make some money off of by selling on Ebay or putting it up for sale on Craigslist. Not only was I able to make some money towards cloth diapers that way but also I was able to declutter and clear out some more room in our home.
Health Insurance Rewards Program
Our health insurance company started a rewards program where if you completed an online health assessment you were given free gift cards in return. Both my husband and I did this, which took maybe 15 minutes to complete and we each received $50 gift cards that could be used anywhere.
Open an Online Bank Account
A couple of times a year Captial One 360 offers cash bonuses if you are a new customer and open up a checking account or savings account with them. I have wanted to do this for a while but had always just missed the deadline for applying. That year though I was ready and when the bonus open enrollment period began I quickly signed up and later received a $200 bonus into my account.
Black Friday Deals
Black Friday is one of the best times of the year to buy cloth diapers. Once I had enough money saved up I waited until I found the right deal where I could get more bang for my buck. When Black Friday came around I was able to get discounted diapers along with an extra free diaper with my purchase.
A few weeks later I found that Zulily (a daily deal site) was having a sale for cloth diapers that normally cost $20 per diaper for just $8.99 each. That was an incredible deal so I went ahead and purchased as many of those cloth diapers that I could with some of the money that I still had saved aside.
Enter Cloth Diaper Giveaway Contests
By finding cloth diaper giveaways online I was actually able to win an extra cloth diaper to add to my cloth diaper stash. In the end, I ended up with a total of 35 brand new cloth diapers and 5 cloth diaper covers which was more than enough for a cloth diaper stash.
