With meat being one of the more expensive grocery items on my list, I have found that by following these steps have helped to reduce our meat expenses.
Make Your Meat Stretch Further
One of the ways to save money on meat is by making your meat stretch further by adding rice, beans or vegetables to your meat. For instance, if you were making tacos you can stretch your meat further by adding rice and/or beans to it.
Another way to make your meat last longer is to use less meat than what the recipe actually calls for. If your recipe calls for one pound of beef try using half a pound instead.
By having one meatless meal a week can be a cost effective way to save money on groceries. This may be a sacrifice for some people but it doesn’t have to be. There are many meatless meals that are still satisfying without meat such as pasta, breakfast foods, and soups.
Shop Clearance Items
I have found that meat is usually put on clearance first thing in the morning at my local groceries stores when they are trying to get rid of meat whose best by date is that day. I will usually stock up on meat that way and if I am not going to be cooking the meat on that day I just put it in my deep freezer to make for later.
Ibotta is a FREE mobile phone app that gives you a small rebate for buying select grocery items at select stores. I have used it to save money on meat as well.
Buy Meat In Bulk
If you have a Sam’s Club or Costco membership you can save money on meat by buying it in bulk. It does cost more money upfront but it is cheaper per pound to buy meat in bulk rather than buying it per pound at a time at the grocery store.
Buy a Pig
If you have the opportunity, go in and a buy a portion of a pig by splitting the cost between 2 or more people. There is an upfront cost but you will be able to save more money per pound in the long run.
These are just some ways to save money on meat. Start with one step at a time with what you think is the easiest step first and add then add in the other steps as you become more comfortable with them.
